Planning for the Second Annual Pike Animal Shelter Fur Fest got off to a flying start Sept. 10 at a community organizational meeting. More than forty ready and willing volunteers from throughout the community gathered to plan the event, share creative ideas, and work on projects to benefit the construction of the shelter on Henderson Road.
The Pike Animal Shelter Fur Fest will be held at the Troy Recreation Center on Nov. 1. The event is a pets-welcome, family-friendly event that celebrates pets, people, and the effort to build the Pike Animal Shelter. Shelter Board member John Lester announced that the favorites from the first Shelter Fur Fest will be back, including the pet parade and contest, pet photos, Beauties and Beasts, Bone Mountain, microchipping and 'pawdicures,' and more.
Several new or expanded features are also in the works, including a Southern-style barbecue vendor, expanded music and dance entertainment, and more. Professional dog trainer Doug Williams will offer obedience classes for a modest fee with proceeds to benefit the shelter.
Watch this newsletter and your email for updates on Fur Fest planning and mark your calendar for Nov. 1!
Mars Petcare, maker of several brands of dog and cat food including Pedigree, has issued a voluntary recall of food produced at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. The food may be tainted with salmonella. To see the list of products that have been recalled, visit http://www.petcare.mars.com/
Pike Animal Shelter sponsors provide critical financial support to the Shelter.
For previous sponsors, this is the time to renew. For new sponsors, this is the time to consider a gift that will benefit not only the animals but also our community.
Shelter sponsors are recognized at Fur Fest, on the Shelter web site, and through the presentation of shirts and certificates. Beginning this year, sponsors who make their contributions by Dec. 31 will be listed through 2009 on the highly visible Pike Animal Shelter sign
on the Henderson Highway. Sponsorship kits are available online and from any board member.

Please contact Troy animal control at 334-566-0500 to make an appointment to see these dogs.
This is Tucker, a beautiful spaniel mix. He is medium-sized, gentle, and very loving! One day, Officer Andress came to the shelter to find a small kitten who had wandered into Tucker’s pen and they became fast friends!!
Meet Ellie, a petite mixed breed. She is a sweet and affectionate dog.
Don’t let this tough-looking guy fool you! Brewster is actually a gentle and reserved Pit Bull mix.
As you can tell from Simon’s mid-lick photo, he is a total lover! He is a small Labrador mix with adorable, short legs.
This pretty puppy is Polly. She is very small and will probably stay in the small to medium size range as an adult. She absolutely craves attention and loves to play!
Meet Sweetie, a hound or possibly beagle mix. She has tons of energy and immediately wants you to be her friend!
He may look intense, but Duffy is a friendly, silly, Bulldog mix.
These two girls are the sweetest Labrador Retrievers will ever meet! Unfortunately, their owners moved away and abandoned them. They are about seven years old and were raised together.
This is Darby, a mellow, easygoing mixed breed.
Meet Bee, a gentle and sweet yellow Labrador mix!
This shy girl is Leila, a mixed breed. She is a little timid, but very loving.
The Pike Animal Shelter does not have the facilities for cats, but someone abandoned these kittens in front of the shelter. They have nowhere else to go, so they have stuck around for about a week. It would be wonderful if someone could help these guys out and give them a home!
